Allen Ginsberg was an American poet. He became a leading figure in the Beat Generation of poets and writers, traveled and lived in France, India, and England, was a Communist and anti-war protester, a Buddhist and a teacher.

History of “Howl”

Howl and Other poems, published by City Lights in San Francisco in 1956, with its supercharged rants, became the center of a free speech vs. obscenity controversy after its publisher, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, was arrested and put on trial.
